Biological Water Remediation

Restoring New Zealand's waterways. Without chemicals.

We deploy proven, enzyme-based microbial solutions that break down contaminants naturally - safe for people, animals, fish, and plants. Science that works with nature, not against it.

New Zealand's freshwater is in crisis

Decades of intensified farming, urban runoff, and industrial discharge have pushed our waterways past breaking point. Regional councils face mounting compliance pressure. Farmers are caught between productivity and regulation. And the chemical treatments most people reach for? They introduce new pollutants while solving old ones.

Microbes that do what chemicals can't

SEBS (Specific Enzyme Bacterial Solution) uses naturally occurring microorganisms to break down organic contaminants into harmless byproducts. No chemicals. No secondary pollution. Just biology doing what it has done for billions of years - only faster, more targeted, and backed by 37 years of laboratory R&D.

Microencapsulated Potency

Each bacterial cell is individually encapsulated, maintaining first-generation laboratory potency until activated at the contamination site. Not a generic probiotic - precision-engineered cultures.

Completely Safe

Harmless to humans, animals, fish, and plants. NZ MPI import approved with zero human pathogens confirmed by independent US laboratory testing.

Bespoke Formulations

Over 950 customised products across 37+ years. Your contamination is unique - your treatment should be too. Cultures formulated for your specific waste profile.

99.7% reduction
From 275x above NZ swimming safety limits to below safe swimming level (126 cfu/100mL)
What does this mean?
E.coli bacteria in water indicate fecal contamination - from livestock, sewage, or wildlife. High levels make water dangerous for human contact and toxic to aquatic ecosystems. NZ recreational freshwater guidelines set 126 cfu/100mL as the safe swimming threshold. The pre-treatment reading of 34,840 was nearly 275 times over that limit. After six days of SEBS treatment, the level dropped to 110 - below the safe swimming standard. For context, NZ drinking water requires less than 1 per 100mL.

93% reduction
From worse than raw sewage to near NZ treatment plant discharge standard (30 mg/L)
What does this mean?
BOD measures how much dissolved oxygen bacteria consume while breaking down organic matter in water. When BOD is high, bacteria use up oxygen that fish and aquatic life need to survive - causing die-offs and ecosystem collapse. A pristine river sits below 1 mg/L. Anything above 8 mg/L is classified as severely polluted. Raw sewage typically measures 200-600 mg/L. The pre-treatment reading of 477 was in the raw sewage range. After SEBS treatment, it dropped to 32 - approaching the NZ discharge standard of 30 mg/L that even mechanical treatment plants target.
Ammonia
Ammoniacal Nitrogen
(mg/L)
Before

After
<1
>89% reduction
From 9x over discharge limits to within NZ regulatory compliance (1 mg/L target)
What does this mean?
Ammonia in waterways comes primarily from livestock waste and fertiliser runoff. Even small concentrations are directly toxic to fish - it damages gills, reduces growth, and at higher levels causes rapid death. It also fuels algal blooms that starve water of oxygen. NZ regulators target 1 mg/L or below for treated wastewater discharge, a level that requires advanced treatment to achieve. SEBS brought this effluent pond from 9.1 mg/L down to below 1 - meeting the regulatory target without any mechanical treatment infrastructure.

Total Suspended
Solids (mg/L)
Before

After

95% reduction
From opaque, silted water to near international freshwater standard (40 mg/L)
What does this mean?
TSS measures solid particles suspended in water - silt, organic debris, and waste matter that makes water murky and blocks light. High TSS smothers riverbeds, blocks sunlight that aquatic plants need for photosynthesis, and clogs the gills of fish and invertebrates. International freshwater standards generally target below 40 mg/L. At 899, this effluent pond was essentially opaque. After SEBS treatment, it dropped to 45 - approaching the freshwater quality threshold with no mechanical filtration.

Lake Pegasus — Cyanobacteria Trial

Independent research conducted by LWT Animal Nutrition Ltd (February 2024) tested SEBS formulations on toxic cyanobacteria in Lake Pegasus, Canterbury.

Both single and combined SEBS treatments majorly reduced toxic algal growth within the first week. The combined treatment maintained sustained low biovolume over 34 days, demonstrating long-term suppression of harmful cyanobacteria species including Microcystis.

Farm Effluent & Livestock

Your effluent pond fails compliance every quarter. SEBS reduces BOD, ammonia, and fecal coliform without chemicals - and eliminates the odour your neighbours complain about.

Rivers, Lakes & Ponds

Algal blooms choking your waterway. Nutrient levels climbing. Consent conditions tightening. SEBS restores water chemistry and protects aquifers without introducing new pollutants.

Wastewater & Industrial

Treatment plants, food processing, municipal sewage. Enhance your existing system's performance or provide standalone biological treatment at a fraction of the infrastructure cost.

Oil & Hydrocarbons

Containable spills and legacy contamination. 1,000 gallons of SEBS treats one square mile. The same technology deployed in the Deepwater Horizon cleanup - now available in New Zealand and Australia.

Aquaculture & Hatcheries

Your stock depends on water quality. SEBS maintains optimal conditions in hatcheries, commercial farms, and ornamental ponds - completely safe for all aquatic life.

Soil Remediation

Contaminated land doesn't always need excavation. Ground-injected SEBS breaks down pollutants in situ - preventing runoff, stopping leaching, and restoring land to productive use.
